South has higher prevalence of mental disorders: study- The Hindu(PG-09)- 24-12-2019

Context:

India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative report has been published in the Lancet Psychiatry.
• Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh account for a higher prevalence of mental disorders that manifest primarily during adulthood in depression and anxiety, according to the first comprehensive estimates of disease burden attributable to mental health from 1990 prepared by the India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative and published in the Lancet Psychiatry.

Key observation of the report:

• Report finds one in seven, or 197 million, Indians suffered from mental health issues in 2017
• Southern states more vulnerable: Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh account for a higher prevalence of mental disorders that manifest primarily during adulthood in depression and anxiety.
• The disease burden is spread across many disorders: These include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, idiopathic developmental intellectual disability, conduct disorders, and autism.
