Musk Deer-THE HINDU-18-02-2020
The Musk deer occurs in northern India such as in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.
It inhabits high alpine environments above altitudes at an elevation range of 2,500-5,000 metres.
Carried by the male deer in its abdomen, the musk emits a sweet persistent aroma and is highly valued for its cosmetic and alleged pharmaceutical properties.
It is listed as endangered by the IUCN because of overexploitation resulting in a probable serious population decline.
